Indonesia

With the world’s fourth largest young population and a rate of youth unemployment five times higher than the adult rate, one of Indonesia’s strategies is to foster a culture of youth entrepreneurship. For that purpose, KAB materials were adapted and translated to Bahasa Indonesia and the first Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters were trained in June 2005. KAB was then pilot tested in 42 secondary vocational schools (SMKs) in Java, Sumatera, Bali, Sulawesi, Kalimantan and Papua in the 2005/2006 school year.

Since the pilot test, KAB implementation has rapidly expanded in Indonesia with more than 50 training workshops for Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters undertaken, resulting in 354 facilitators trained to promote and teach KAB. As of May 2009, a total of 132 secondary vocational schools had taught KAB to approximately 45,945 students. Moreover, the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) is currently providing support to the ILO’s initiative to expand the implementation of KAB and the delivery capacity of educational institutions through the ILO executed Education and Skills Training (EAST) programme for youth. Plans to gradually roll out the KAB curriculum to all 5,300 public and private secondary vocational schools, as well as all secondary general academic schools (SMAs), are underway. A significant step towards reaching this goal will be taken in 2009, when another 800 school teachers are scheduled to be trained in KAB. Useful information about KAB implemented in Indonesia is presented on the regionally adapted website: http://kabvebcmalang.wordpress.com/
