Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is one of the countries with the longest KAB experience, actively implementing the programme as an essential tool for promoting more enterprising young people since late 2000. That year, KAB was translated into Russian, opening the possibility for Central Asian countries to introduce and implement the program and Kyrgyzstan was one of the first to start the implementation process. The first training of Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters was carried out in 2002, in Bishkek, gathering 15 participants from the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and vocational training institutions from various regions. Later, the provisional Russian language version of the materials was pilot tested in Kyrgyzstan during the 2002/2003 school year in 8 vocational training institutions, reaching around 106 students. A group of KAB teachers and curriculum development specialists carried out an assessment of this experience and determined that the program should be continued and expanded.

Following this assessment, the Government decided to issue a decree concerning changes in the curriculum of the primary vocational education system where by a course called “Basic Business and Entrepreneurship”, developed with inputs from KAB contents, was to be taught in schools starting from the 2004-2005 academic year. This measure triggered a rapid increase in the distribution of KAB materials, as well as in the amount of trainings of Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters carried out.

So far, more than 10 training workshops have been held, training over 140 Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters. Also, it is estimated that about 44 educational establishments of primary vocational education have taught the new entrepreneurship curriculum based on KAB (approximately 42% of all educational establishments), reaching over 5,025 young students around the whole country. Besides the version developed for Russian-speaking countries, a national version in Kyrgyz was introduced allowing the implementing institutions nowadays the option to use either one according to the students’ profile. Also, KAB was adapted and taught in Kyrgyzstan to out-of-school youth and children living in rural areas in 2007, as part of the ILO’s efforts to combat the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Central Asia.
